Should Obama Change His Approach to the Islamic State Group After Paris?
The world is still reeling from deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday, and with fears of a similar assault in the U.S., some have criticized President Barack Obama for dismissing calls to scale up U.S. military efforts against the Islamic State group and for doubling down on his approach thus far.  World Hot Topics Blog
"We have always understood that this will be a long-term campaign," the president said, speaking at the G-20 summit in Turkey on Monday. "There will be setbacks and there will be successes. The terrible events in Paris were obviously a terrible and sickening setback." Obama also rejected calls to put ground troops in Syria, saying, "It's best that we don't shoot first and aim later." The president's deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes underscored Obama's approach, saying, "We don't believe U.S. troops are the answer to the problem." Other Obama advisers, The New York Times reports, say the administration is considering several response options, which include aiding allies in the region, more airstrikes and raids by special operations forces. But Republicans are slamming the president's game plan against the Islamic State group and response to the Paris attacks. 2016 GOP hopeful and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush admonished Obama, saying he "doesn't understand we're at war." South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, also a Republican presidential candidate, advocated for U.S. ground troops in the region, telling CNN that "without American boots on the ground in Syria and Iraq, we're going to get hit here at home. And if you don't understand that, you're not ready to be commander-in-chief, in my view."
Even Hillary Clinton, the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race, has insisted the U.S. amp up its efforts to defeat the Islamic State group. While she agreed that boots on the ground are not the answer, she refuted Obama's assertion that the group had been "contained" and called for increased airstrikes and a no-fly zone in northern Syria. She also noted the 50 special operations soldiers Obama ordered to Syria last month have not left yet and must be "immediately" deployed.
The president, for his part, announced new counterterrorism efforts on Monday to prevent another tragedy like Paris. "We're streamlining the process by which we share intelligence and operational military information with France," he said at the G-20 summit, adding that "we need to be doing everything we can to protect against more attacks and protect our citizens." Two Deaths Confirmed In Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak

9/10/2015 3:45 PM ET

Two people have reportedly died as a result of a salmonella outbreak linked with cucumbers. The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed a total of 341 cases directly linked with the cucumbers, which were imported from Mexico.

The CDC released an official statement on the outbreak.

"Seventy ill people have been hospitalized, and two deaths have been reported from California and Texas. Arizona, California, Montana, and Nevada isolated Salmonella from samples of cucumbers collected from various locations that were distributed by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce," the CDC explained.

"Consumers should not eat, restaurants should not serve, and retailers should not sell recalled cucumbers," they added. "If you aren't sure if your cucumbers were recalled, ask the place of purchase or your supplier. When in doubt, don't eat, sell, or serve them and throw them out."

What are the Symptoms of Salmonella

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. It is important to note that this outbreak is caused bySalmonella Poona.

How Soon do Symptoms Appear After Exposure?

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

What are the Complications of Salmonella Infections?

In some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In these patients, theSalmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.

Who is at Risk?

Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis. The rate of diagnosed infections in children less than five years old is higher than the rate in all other people. Children younger than 5 years of age, the elderly, and those people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections. It is estimated that approximately 400 persons in the United States die each year with acute salmonellosis.

Bacteria that can help fight cancer

Bacteria that can help fight cancer
New York, June 9 (IANS) A toxin secreted by a water and food-borne bacterium that can cause lethal infections in persons with liver disease, has the potential to prevent the growth of tumours, says a new study by Northwestern Medicine scientists.

"A toxin protein from the bacterium Vibrio vulnificus can inhibit tumour cell growth by cutting the protein Ras," researchers said.
"Ras is important for cell proliferation in cancer, so the toxin could potentially be developed as a treatment for different types of tumours," said one of the researchers Karla Satchell, professor in microbiology-immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US.                  World Hot Topics Blog

"The bacterium uses the MARTX (multifunctional-autoprocessing repeats-in-toxin) toxin protein to inactivate Ras, increasing its own virulence and allowing it to spread throughout the host," the study said.

"It has been known that Ras has a role in cancer development and targeting Ras has been one of the hardest challenges of cancer research and drug discovery," Satchell said.
The findings appeared in the journal Nature Communications.
